Knowing PageRank and SEOSearch Engine Optimization and PageRank are closely related to each other but they are not synonymous. PR or PageRank is like a grade given to a particular website and it is only one part of search engine optimization. Search engine optimization, on the other hand, pertains to the entire process of getting ranked in search engines. While PR plays a vital role in the search engine optimization process, they are not the same.

If you do not know where PR comes from, it is created and patented in Stanford University but it was later bought by Google. Even though Stanford can freely use the service, Google still has exclusive rights to it because it has given up to 1.8 million of shares to gain it.
To understand PR, it is simply a prime measurement device to assess how certain websites plays in the internet space. It is a form of ranking websites based on their performance. Though there are some factors that are also taking into consideration such as traffic and backlinks, PR is the obvious first hand data that internet marketers can use when rating the value of a particular website.
PR can be understood better if it is discussed in terms of votes. Typically, the more votes a website incur, the greater its PR will be. You may be wondering what I am pertaining to when I say “votes”. Well, this simply pertains to the number of links from other websites that goes to the site. In simple terms, this is called backlinks. Given this, one can say that the more backlinks you have, the greater PR your site will have.

But of course, when votes are tackled, you should also take note of the PR of sites that are voting. If the PR of a particular website is high, it means that the website has a high authority on the Internet. Votes are not only counted based on quantity but also based on quality. The more high PR websites linking to a particular website, the more trustworthy the site will be.
From here, you may wonder what PR is for. Well, PR rates the value of a website. If you are looking to buy and sell websites then PR is one thing you must consider. Also, another great thing about PR is the power of advertising. Since high PR sites are thought to have more authority, a lot of business owners love to advertise on these websites.
But one thing you must always remember is that PR must be built naturally. You should avoid planting links just by dropping your sites to various directories. It is better to have a few quality links than to have hundreds of garbage links. When I say garbage links, this pertains to empty or spam links that are planted in forums or blogs. Quality links are naturally given by a website that thinks that your website is of value.

Another thing you must know about is false or inflated PR. This is created in order to deceive others. Since PR is a measure of website’s marketability, a lot of people who sell websites usually fake the PR with the hope that someone will buy their website for a higher value. This is something that you should carefully watch out for. If you are planning to buy a website, be sure to check the site’s PR on a fake PR tracker. This way, you will not be fooled.
PR is one aspect of search engine optimization so they are different. But even as time passes by, PR will remain as a trustworthy measure of a website’s authority.
