Secrets to a successful website and SEO

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

A website is like a cake. A great cake has great contents and is baked just nice without overdoing it or doing it less. The content of a cake resembles the content of a website. If the content of the website is made with the highest quality product, it isn’t guaranteed that the result will be good. To make a great cake, the temperature along various other things needs to be controlled. For a website, this is the search engine optimization of a website.

There are ways of getting popularity for a website. It can be good and it can be bad. Bad PR can be attributed from spam or by giving out bad comments to others. Good PR on the other hand works if the person gives out excellent advice while still promoting their website.

In addition to that, try targeting long tail keywords instead of general keywords. After you have scored with the long keywords, try aiming for a shorter keyword until you get to that general keyword. The process may be slow but it would be the best way to rank in a diverse keyword.

Websites must be easy to access by both search engines and visitors. If it takes too many clicks to get to a desired page, consider making it easier by placing some links that would help visitors navigate throughout the website. Webmaster ego can potentially destroy a website so it is best to stop thinking about oneself and more about other people.

Decreasing Bounce Rate

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Having a lot of visitors can never always be a good thing. It is a good thing if these visitors stay and read or buy things in the website. However, a site with a lot of visitors but a high amount of bounce rate is never good as well. This means that the visitors stayed for only a short while before going to another website.

Decreasing bounce rate may take a lot of work and it depends mostly on the site and its contents. Here is how a person can decrease his or her site’s bounce rate:

  • Improve the looks of the site – Do not have anything in striking colors and instead let it be pleasant to the eye. Instead of having old fashioned web design, try to stay with the new web 2.0 designs that are a lot attractive.
  • Increase the amount of content or make it more informative – For an eCommerce website, try to sell a lot more product so that it gives bigger choices for the potential customers. Try to have some discounts that may attract potential customers as well.
  • Target the correct and most precise keyword terms – This means that if a site sells t-shirts, do not place keywords for products that aren’t available on the site even if there is a plan on adding these products in the future. Use keywords that are the most relevant to the website.

Securing a Website

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

What happens when a website gets hacked? Not only will the owner lose their website but if for any reason that the sites store confidential data, it may fall to unwanted hands. These are just some of the worst case scenarios that may emerge due to a website being hacked.

There are a lot of ways that a site can get hacked. Hackers may embed Trojan horse inside the server or any other spywares that may potentially give out information to them. In some cases, a Denial of Service attack can take place rendering the site useless and may potentially cause the site to go bankrupt due to the cost of the attack.

Securing a server or a website is of utmost importance. One of the ways of doing so is by updating all the applications inside the server to the latest version. Some examples include the operating system, the control panel, apache/php/mysql server and even the script that the site utilizes.

In addition to that, if a server is run through PHP, there are modules and add-ons that the web owner should check out. The Suhosin add-on can greatly boost the security of the server and the usage of mod_suphp is also highly recommended. Firewalls and anti-viruses can also help in preventing any unwanted occurrence to happen. Some webhosts also provide DoS protection so it may be best to check out these webhosts as well.

It is of utmost importance to secure a website. It ensures that no data would fall to the wrong hands. If this does happen, it will greatly affect the credibility of a website and potentially destroy it as well.

This is because search engines do love new contents and it is best to actually update a site frequently. Therefore, here are some ideas on what to blog about

  1. Introduce a staff or an employee of the site – This is a great way of letting the audience know about the people that are running the website. It will be a lot more engaging as well. However, it may be best to limit the whole article to only the last name of the staff.
  2. Product Announcement – New products will surely arrive every now and then and it may be best to try and talk about these latest gadgets or merchandise. Writers may find that their readers will try to ask more about these products and in return, the two parties will be able to engage in a short conversation or even a debate.
  3. Talk about charities – Disaster strikes every now and then. Previously it was the tsunami that affected millions of lives and now another disaster struck on Haiti. Talk about these disasters and try to promote some of the charities that are established to help the people in need.

Getting a Domain Name

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

A domain name is what makes a site different from each other. There is no two domain name that is the same unless they use different top level domain such as .com, .org, .net and others.

Getting the correct domain name might be a problem as it involves a lot of thinking to it. Once that is done, users will have to check whether the domain name they want is available or not and if it isn’t available, they will have to figure out a new one until they get one that is available. This process can take minutes if they are lucky or hours if they are not.

So, what is a good name to get? If the site is intended for a particular country, they can create a site based on the country’s TLD. For example, the .in TLD is intended for India while .us is for United States. By creating a domain name on a specific country TLD, the site also has a potential to rank well on search engine sites on that specific country or region.

A business site on the other hand or sites that do not mainly focus on search engine on getting their users can get brandable domain names such as http://www.att.com/ for AT&T http://www.cnn.com for CNN and many others.

However, sites that depend on search engines to get their viewers should get a domain name related to the topic being talked about in the website. Such example is http://www.weboptimizationseo.com. From this domain name, users would know that the content of this domain name involves web optimization as well as SEO (search engine optimization).

Once that is done, domain registration can be done at the many registrars available on the Internet. GoDaddy and NameCheap are just a few to mention.

Choosing a Topic for a Website

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Creating a site is no longer for intended for high-tech people. Instead, people with little experience on managing a site can jump into the bandwagon and start their own site. There are numerous CMS or content management systems that simplify the creation of the website and if you think that is hard enough, programs such as Dreamweaver by Adobe can help you in a long way.

Choosing a topic for a website may be one of the hardest things while creating a website and why wouldn’t it be? Once the topic is chosen, you will have to stick with it and constantly update it so that it will gain popularity amongst people.

So, what kind of website should you choose? It is highly recommended that you start a website about a topic or niche that you currently have interest in. For example, if you are a car enthusiast, why not start a website about cars? You can talk about how to repair them or some of the new cars that have recently emerged in the market.

A lot of people find that they have problem finding the niche that they would like to go to and would then resort in the “how to make money” niche. This isn’t recommended at all since there are hundreds of thousands of sites dedicated to this topic alone and a lot of them are scams with a very few that actually works. Unless you’ve made some money online, we don’t recommend that you create such type of websites.

Choosing a topic may be difficult but once it is chosen, stick to that topic and update your site as frequently as possible. We’re not talking about on a monthly basis here, it is best to update your site every one or two days.

Getting Traffic

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Getting quality traffic may be one of the hardest parts of web development and most sites barely make it before they stop running. Traffic can be of various types such as paid traffic, traffic through advertisements and many more and each with its own purpose.

Currently, there are hundreds of sites offering visitors to any website. Most of the time, these are visitors with very little quality and might not be worth the money as well if the webmaster expects to actually make some money out of these traffic. However, these types of traffics can be used to increase the Alexa ranking of the site so that it may invite potential buyers in case there is a need of selling these websites.

Getting these paid traffics can be through various ways. Users can check the Traffic section of Digitalpoint to get some of these traffics. Depending on the specification and the nature of these traffics, it may cost the user quite little or potentially a lot of money as well.

A much more decent quality of traffic can be obtained through the help of legit (not those popup/pop under advertising companies) advertising companies such as Google AdWords or Yahoo Publisher Network. These sites allow a much more targeted traffic that could potentially boost the site as well. Those that are new to these sites may opt to buy some vouchers to help start the advertising.
